On Saturday, August 24th at 9:30 am, the Jonesborough Genealogical Society will host Lisa Whaley, publisher for the Herald and Tribune, for its August Genealogy Day at the Washington County-Jonesborough Library, 200 Sabin Drive, Jonesborough. Whaley received her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Eastern Washington State University, and has since worked for more than 30 years as a writer, editor, general manager and publisher within a field she continues to love. Still, Whaley is quick to admit that even though she loves her newspaper, she loves history even more. She has lived and delighted in an old, old house; has collected countless bits of faded photographs, chipped china and worn books; and is never happier than when she is hearing stories from the past. As its publisher, Whaley is especially excited to be a part of the Herald & Tribune’s 150 anniversary celebration. The H&T was first published on Aug. 26, 1869, and will be featuring a special commemorative 150th anniversary edition in its Aug. 28, 2019 publication. During the Aug. 24th program, Whaley will take a look at 150 years of community history seen through the eyes of the local newspaper. She will also discuss changes in newspaper coverage and design from 1869 to 2019, as well as some of the surprises uncovered while digging through old editions. So come join the JGS and the H&T in celebrating 150 years of the H&T and see local history played out in yet another resource that has survived the test of time!
